About Emergent Berlin Festival
The Emergent Berlin Festival focuses on presenting local initiatives for sustainability, from personal, ecological, aesthetic, cultural, economic and social perspectives (p.e.a.c.e.s.).
“A festival for bottom-up transformation towards sustainability.”
Since 2013, Das Baumhaus’s annual self-organised gathering has brought together a broad range of local projects and people who want to take action for transformation towards sustainability in their work, lives and neighborhoods, in Berlin and beyond. Over the years, the festival has served as a seismograph and catalyst for emerging initiatives as well as a space for networking and shared learning. (Archive: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). In 2020, due to the pandemic, the festival was postponed. In 2021, EMB starts anew.
About this Year's Festival
Over the last year, new scientific data has shown again and again that climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are happening even faster than previously predicted. At the same time, the pandemic has turned everything upside-down for many of us. We can’t keep going as before. Emergent Berlin Festival 2021 focuses on inspiring and helping each other to step up to the plate:
“RISING TO MEET THE CRISES”
This year’s theme was inspired by the concert “Rise of the Evengers” by Baumhaus and friends. It tells the story of how, on a dying planet in desperate need of saving, a group of everyday heroes rose, dedicated to bringing more balance back into the world…
Rather than sticking to our week-long festival concept, we chose to turn the festival into an ongoing event series to reconnect, reflect on and share our collective and individual experiences and strategies.
About Baumhaus
Emergent Berlin Festival is brought to you by Das Baumhaus — an open socio-cultural project in Berlin-Wedding, that is building up a local hub for the transformation towards sustainability.
Baumhaus is founded by Scott Bolden and Karen Wohlert (who are organizing this year’s festival together with Maia Frazier). In our project space, we and our neighbors come together to take action. Together with our broad network, we support local initiatives, social businesses and organisations with space, events, workshops and creative design services for sustainable solutions.
